GATLINBURG , Tenn . —
A new and unique fishing tournament , with an emphasis on river cleanup , has been scheduled by the Gatlinburg Recreation Department . The Spring Trout Tournament and River Cleanup is slated for Saturday , April 2 . The event has been scheduled in lieu of the annual tournament scheduled by Gregg Ward , who unfortunately canceled his event this year due to health issues .
“When the City learned that Mr . Ward was unable to hold his Tournament this year , the Recreation Department made plans to hold this event , ” Gatlinburg Trout Facility Manager Travis Williams said . “Fishing in Gatlinburg is very important to many people and being able to fish in clean waters and surroundings is imperative , which is why the emphasis has been placed on cleaning up litter , especially in areas along the river and below the tree line . ”
No entry fee will be charged to Tournament participants . In place of the entry fee , all participants will be required to turn in at least a small grocery bag with litter in it at the weigh - in to be eligible for the fishing prizes . A separate prize for the person who turns in the most litter will also be given . Prizes will also be given for the biggest fish , the longest fish and tagged fish .
Pre - registration for the Tournament will be held on Friday , April 1 from 12 - 2:30 p . m . at Herbert Holt Park , while day of registration will be on April 2 from 6 - 7:30 a . m . at Herbert Holt Park . Weigh - in will be from 10 a . m . until 11 a . m . , also at Herbert Holt Park .
