The Department:
The Caroline County Department of Public Works maintains the County’s infrastructure including roads, bridges, drainage, public buildings, fleet, and heavy equipment. The Department is divided into two major divisions: Roads and Special Services. The Roads Division maintains over 300 miles of paved and tar-and-chip roads and about 78 miles of unpaved roads. This includes maintaining bridges, culverts, roadway shoulders and signs. The Special Services Division takes care of nearly 250,000 square feet of County buildings. The County’s fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment represents about $10 million of equipment.
About the Position:
The County Roads Worker is a full time, safety sensitive position in the Public Works Department. Depending on the needs of the Department, the employee may be assigned to either of the two Divisions and reassigned as operational needs change. An employee working in this class specification will work under the general supervision of a crew leader doing a wide range of tasks including but not limited to road and bridge maintenance, equipment maintenance, building repairs and maintenance, and general laborer work.
Requirements: County Roads Worker -
This is a semi-skilled position where the employee will be expected to learn many of the required skills on the job or through assigned training courses. The employee will be expected to perform productive work while learning necessary skills.
Applicants must demonstrate basic working knowledge in one or more of the below areas:
Road construction and maintenance.
Work safely at all times.
Proficiently operate vehicles including but not limited to:
Four-wheel drive trucks
Dump trucks
Front end loaders
Mowers and tractors
Snowplow, and sanding equipment
Forklift
Pull and back trailers
Proficiently operate power equipment such as:
Chain saws
Power hand tools
Air Compressor
Woodchippers
Jackhammer
Plate Tamper
Jumping Jack
Asphalt saw
Weed eater
Water pumps
And other construction equipment needed to perform a variety of road maintenance tasks
Use hand tools such as:
Shovels
Rakes
Sledgehammers
Loots
Mechanics tools
And other tools as needed to complete task
Education and License/Training Requirements
:
Maryland Class “B” CDL with tanker, air brakes, and manual transmission endorsements (or equivalent).
Maryland Public Agency Roadside Tree Care Certificate.
ATSSA Flagger Training Certificate
Applicants must demonstrate ability to secure necessary licenses and permits with six (6) months of employment.
County Roads Operator -
This is a semi-skilled position where the employee will be expected to learn many of the required skills on the job or through assigned training courses. The employee will be expected to perform productive work while learning necessary skills.
Applicants must demonstrate basic working knowledge in one or more of the below areas:

A Boom Mower
Track loader and all attachments
Roll off truck
Rubber tired roller
Steel wheeled roller
Trencher
Four-wheel drive trucks
Dump trucks
Front end loaders
Mowers and tractors
Snowplow, and sanding equipment
Forklift
Pull and back trailers
Proficiently operate power equipment such as:
Hydro Seeder
Hot Box
Culvert cleaner
Vacuum trailer
Chain saws
Power hand tools
Air Compressor
Woodchippers
Jackhammer
Plate Tamper
Jumping Jack
Asphalt saw
Weed eater
Water pumps
And other construction equipment needed to perform a variety of road maintenance tasks
Use hand tools such as:
Shovels
Rakes
Sledgehammers
Loots
Mechanics tools
And other tools as needed to complete tasks

Education and License/Training Requirements
:
Successful candidates must have a HS Diploma or equivalent.
Maryland Class “B” CDL with tanker, air brakes, and endorsements (or equivalent).
Maryland Public Agency Roadside Tree Care Certificate.
ATSSA Flagger Training Certificate
MDE Erosion and Sediment control green card
Submit 3-year driving record along with applications.

Starting Salary:
County Roads Worker - $16.56 - $20.04 Hourly
County Roads Operator - $17.96 - $21.51 Hourly
May vary based upon experience
