CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Fleet Mechanics perform preventive maintenance services and are responsible for inspecting, diagnosing and repairing a variety of vehicles and equipment. Employees in this job classification must possess a high level of skill in the areas of hydraulics, electrical, and diagnostics while using modern maintenance practices and technologies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
·
Performs inspection, diagnosis and repair of electrical, charging, starting, fuel, ignition, cooling, heating, hydraulic, suspension, braking, air and steering systems on vehicles and equipment.
·
Adjusts, repairs, rebuilds and overhauls components including, but not limited to, engines, transmissions, drive shafts, differentials, radiators and bodies.
·
Repairs and replaces bodies, housings, brackets and accessories using machining tools and equipment.
·
Enters and files repair orders and utilizes fleet maintenance software programs associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage/materials and accounting for repair times.
·
Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with OSHA standards and performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures and protocols.
·
Drives vehicles and equipment into and out of service bays and performs road tests as well as safety checks.
·
Estimates time and material costs on vehicle repairs and requisitions for new parts.
·
Checks the condition of and replaces all fluids, coolants, lubricants, belts and hoses as needed.
·
Performs general servicing and tune-up work, makes service calls for emergency breakdowns and repairs and changes tires.
·
Applies basic knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a variety of automobiles, trucks and heavy equipment.
·
Applies knowledge and skill in the use of shop tools and equipment such as impact and torque wrenches, gauges, micrometers, drum resurfacing machines, and computer electronic systems that interpret failure modes to initiate or assign repairs (i.e.,
Ford Scanner, Snap On Scanner, and Freon recovery unit).

Fabricates special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other devices/parts and accessories as needed.
·
Repairs and maintains air compressors, pumps, and other specialized equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years successful experience in the service, maintenance, and repair of relevant vehicles and equipment.

ASE
or equivalent certification as required by industry standards.
·
Refrigerant handling and recovery certification.
·
Valid Florida driver license Class “D” or higher with preference for valid Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in conjunction with a clean driving record.
·
Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment of automotive and power- driven equipment and of the repair, adjustment, overhaul, maintenance and skills related to the use of tools and equipment of the trade.

Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanics of internal combustion engines.
·
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
·
Skill in the use, operation, and care of standard tools used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and small engine equipment.
·
Knowledge of the methods, practices, and tools of automotive paint and body work and of materials, methods, and tools of the welding trade.
·
Ability to diagnose trouble in automotive and equipment-related electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic equipment.
·
Ability to read and follow instructions and procedures in equipment service and repair manuals.
·
Ability to perform the heavy mechanical automotive and equipment service and repair work under adverse working conditions.
·
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
·
Knowledge of current technology and software applications appropriate to assigned job responsibilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds) and on occasion the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects (100+ pounds).
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling where physical risks can be predicted/controlled by observance of standard safety precautions and use of protective gear and equipment. Some tasks are performed in an environment with potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, dirt, odors and loud noise as well as exposure to occupational risks such as cuts, burns, toxic chemicals, etc.
