Job Description
Title: Fire Marshal
Department: Fire
Reports To: Assistant Fire Chief
Status: Full Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Grade: 21 (Non-Uniformed)
Definition
This position serves as the head of the Fire Prevention/Risk Reduction Division of the Fire Department and is appointed by the Fire Chief as the official “Fire Marshal” of the City of Brentwood. This position involves the performance of skilled inspection work to secure and maintain compliance with municipal fire codes. Work includes the inspection and re-inspection of a variety of existing structures, review of new construction and remodeling blueprints, inspection of new and remodeled construction, and participation in the departmental fire prevention education programs.

Develops, implements, and evaluates programs, policies, and procedures for the Fire Prevention Bureau operations, including training, public education, pre-fire planning, inspections, code enforcement, construction plan review, suppression and alarm system acceptance testing, water supply, fire investigation, and hazardous material regulation.
Coordinates projects with members of the City’s Planning and Development Department.
Investigate complaints of possible fire hazard conditions, determine if fire hazards are present, and initiate action to secure correction if a hazard is present.
Knows and follows rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the Fire Department.
Maintains through knowledge of the geography and streets of the City of Brentwood.
Participates in training programs and activities.
Writes reports and documents related data in Fire Reporting Systems software when required.
Drives and operates City owned vehicles as authorized.
Participates in pre-planning fire tactics to improve service and rescue.
As directed, participates in training classes to maintain, and upgrade knowledge, skills, and certification.
Performs and works in accordance with all safety policies and procedures, including the protocols for infection control.
On occasion, may make public presentations, conduct tours of the station, or assist in presenting training classes for other staff, volunteers, community groups, or fire personnel from other districts.
Perform other duties related as requested or required.
Job Qualifications
Must be 21 years old prior to starting date
Must be a U.S. citizen
High school diploma or equivalent
Must possess and maintain a valid state of residence driver’s license
Must have the ability to articulate and concisely communicate orally and in writing
Desired Qualifications
Five years’ experience in fire or emergency medical service work.

Missouri Fire Service Instructor I
International Fire Code Certifications
Missouri Certified Fire Inspector
Missouri Certified Fire Investigator
Critical Skills/Expertise
Knowledge of functions, policies, and procedures of the Brentwood Fire Department.
Knowledge of safety rules and procedures.
Ability to function efficiently under stress, related factors consistent with the job, such as the exposure to personal threat of serious injury or death to either fire personnel or civilian.
Ability to function in extremes of weather; and the ability to go long periods of time without food, or rest.
Ability to perform physical tasks that require heavy physical exertion.
Ability to follow the chain of command.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Ability to interact effectively in group situations.
Ability to be compassionate with people.
Ability to operate as a team member as well as independently when necessary.
Understand the basic principles of NIMS.
Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
Possess a strong work ethic; and possess demonstrated integrity, tact, and resourcefulness.
Dependable and prompt in reporting for duty.

Potential Exposures
Physical: Work performed primarily in office, vehicles, and outdoor settings, in all work weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night; risk of electrical shock, vibration and conditions of low or no visibility.
Chemical: Smoke, noxious odors, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, and oils exposures when fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance.
Biological: Fumes or airborne particles.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration and rarely works in limited visibility situations.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, except during certain inspection or investigation activities when moderately loud noise levels may be found.
