The Westshore Central Dispatch Center (“WCD”) is recruiting for a part-time Fire/EMS dispatcher. The WCD sends fire and EMS responders to emergency calls in the cities of Bay Village, Fairview Park, North Ridgeville, Rocky River and Westlake and for mutual aid to other neighboring communities. This position will perform fire/EMS dispatch work operating and monitoring communications equipment in response to fire and medical emergencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Performs dispatch work to monitor and control the movement of fire/EMS units and provides effective response to public safety fire/EMS emergencies using a variety of computer systems and dispatch equipment.
Communicates and coordinates activity between other agencies and fire department personnel as well as the dispatching of peripheral assistance such as tow trucks, transportation requests, and citizen responders.
Prioritizes and obtains pertinent data from both emergency and non-emergency contacts and uses a computer assisted system to dispatch fire/EMS by transmitting information to the appropriate unit.
Maintains records of dispatch time and unit assignment.
Maintains communications and monitors the status of mobile units for the arrival at dispatched location, ascertains seriousness and exact circumstances of the fire/EMS emergency, notifies dispatch supervisors as warranted, and dispatches requested information or additional assistance as needed.
Diverts units from response areas or assigned locations when necessary to maintain continuous coverage within all fire districts.
Resolves problems encountered during daily operations and determines appropriate solutions.
Contributes to the development of the performance enhancement plan, documents performance, provides performance feedback and furnishes information for the formal performance evaluation.
Ability to communicate with persons under stress or emergency conditions and render immediate service according to established procedures or instructions.
Level of Supervision Received and Quality Review
Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry those assignments through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions, accuracy, completeness and conformance to standard practice or precedence. Reoccurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.
Qualifications and Skill Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent required; an alternate combination of education and work experience demonstrating the skill required to perform the job will also be considered.
One year of experience at the type and level of a Fire/EMS Dispatcher and one year of computer experience in a Microsoft Windows environment or comparable operating system.

Knowledge of basic fire/EMS procedures and assignments sufficient to be able to effectively prioritize dispatch units and maintain sufficient protection within all sectors.
Knowledge of normal response areas or assigned locations and Westcom’s geography and street layout sufficient to be able to determine district responses to ensure continuous coverage within all districts and to provide direction to mobile units enroute to an emergency.
Skill in communicating clearly and concisely to elicit, and/or present explanatory information while controlling emotions and voice inflexions over the phone during varying degrees of stress.
Skill in determining the seriousness of an emergency and knowing when to notify appropriate authority as necessary.
Skill in establishing effective working relationships with other employees and organizations in emergency or other situations.
Skill in the interpretation and application of written guidelines, precedents and work practices to standardized work situations or specific cases.
Skill in utilizing a variety of computer systems and dispatching equipment.
Ability to work under pressure, exercise good judgment, make sound decisions, and respond in an assertive and professional manner during routine and high stress situations.
Ability to learn and interpret maps, learn radio and other codes, and interpret data received from multiple sources.
Ability to multi-task a variety of functions, media, conversations, and other environmental factors
Ability to define problems, collect data quickly and accurately, and draw solid conclusions.

Work Environment
Work is subject to varying and unpredictable situations as it requires handling of emergency or crisis situations. The work is also subject to many interruptions and pressure due to multiple calls and inquires. It requires judgment and action in life threatening situations. Work is scheduled in shifts with multiple days off, some holidays and weekends are required, subject to changing work schedule.
