   Position Title: Fire Chief
   **This is a 6-month term position consisting of full-time hours, and has the possibility of extension or becoming permanent**
   The City of Wetaskiwin is seeking a fire services leader who demonstrates teamwork, excellent customer service, and a passion for serving our community. The ability to clearly communicate, make effective decisions in quick succession, and manage time well are key elements of this role.
   Reporting to the General Manager of Community & Protective Services, the Fire Chief will oversee, plan, direct and control all aspects of the Wetaskiwin Fire Department including administration, fire suppression, fire prevention and rescue activities. The Fire Chief will also administer applicable local, provincial, and federal fire regulations. Administrative duties include planning, directing, and controlling all fire department activities including recruitment of personnel, purchase of equipment, control of expenditures, preparation of budget estimates and the assignment of personnel and equipment to meet required objectives.
   Responsibilities:
   Plans, directs, and supervises the activities of the fire department.
   Ensures that all fire service programs, activities, and goals are consistent with Council objectives.
   Establishes and implements operational guidelines based on best practices and OH&S regulations.
   Develops and implements fire training programs in accordance with accepted standards to improve the skills/abilities of all staff in firefighting and rescue procedures.
   Ensures adequate records are kept of all required maintenance and training.
   Prepares and submits an annual budget and long-range plan and make expenditures within approved limits.
   Develops and revises a long-range capital plan to keep pace with development within the community.
   Liaises with and advises the City's planning and engineering departments (and other applicable departments) on development implications for firefighting as part of the development approval process.
   Ensures that all local government policies and processes are adhered to.
   Liaises with representatives of neighbouring fire departments to ensure adequate mutual aid agreements are made for mitigating major emergency incidents.
   Participates in the local and regional emergency planning process.
   Oversees fire service-related fundraising activities and events.
   Can assume the position of DEM (Director of Emergency Management) in the City's Emergency Operations Centre in the event of a crisis.
   Participates in civic programs, emergency measures operations, fire safety, public education, and prevention programs. Attends and addresses groups and meetings, promotes and maintains effective public relations in alignment with City policy.
   Directs fire prevention, public education, inspections, and bylaw operations.
   Promotes a safe workplace, ensuring that all established safety procedures are followed, and everyone gets home safely.
   Ensures the fire department stays current in fire protection technology and methods.
   Completes fire inspections in the community.
   Education and Work Experience:
   Completion of Grade 12
   and
   possesses knowledge of all applicable federal, provincial, and local regulations, standards, and guidelines--especially the Fire Service Act and Regulations, as well as the Alberta Fire Service Minimum Training Standards.
   Knowledge and training in Incident Command System (ICS), possessing a minimum of ICS200.
   Minimum of 10 years of firefighting experience, with progressive responsibility within the fire service industry.
   Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
   Knowledge of the NFPA 1001 and 1002 Firefighter Training Standard; NFPA 1041 Level 1 & 2 Fire Service Instructor, and NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator Professional Qualifications
   Knowledge of OH&S regulations
   Knowledge of the City of Wetaskiwin and its fire protection area
   Superior organization skills, coupled with the ability to make informed and educated decisions
   Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
   Exceptional conflict resolution skills and employee engagement strategies
   Able to readily adapt to changing priorities
   Able to display sound judgement and act decisively in high-risk situations
   Proven leadership skills
   Able to develop strategic and functional department plans
   Proven ability to oversee and manage emergency/crisis situations
   Sound knowledge of provincial legislation and bylaws relating to fire services and emergency management
   Responsible nature, and can oversee staffing, professional development, and training
   Must be able to work with technology and possess competent computer skills
