FDA Commissioner Robert M . Califf , M . D . expressed his excitement about Jones joining the team , praising his impressive career , leadership experience , and vision for the future of the Human Foods Program . He also highlighted that this reorganization is a huge undertaking for the agency . I ' m pretty confident that with Jim leading the way , we ' ll build a stronger organization that ' s more connected to other parts of the FDA . Our main focus will be on making sure the food we regulate is safe and nutritious , while also staying on top of the latest advancements in food science and nutrition . I ' m really looking forward to working with Jim when he joins us next month . In other news , the FDA ' s proposal for laboratories has changed . The plan now is to move medical products and specialty labs from the ORA to the Office of Chief Scientist ( OCS ) . The OCS is a cross - cutting office that supports the research , science , and innovation that are important to the FDA ' s regulatory mission . By bringing together ORA ' s medical product and specialty labs with the labs currently under the OCS , like the ones run by the National Center for Toxicological Research , we ' ll have a comprehensive network that provides state - of - the - art scientific and analytical support for the entire FDA portfolio . Jones will have support from an executive leadership team and will collaborate closely with other FDA executives to make sure priorities are coordinated and moved forward . He ' ll also be working closely with the ORA on human foods - related activities , as well as with the Center for Veterinary Medicine on activities related to human foods . Jones will be reporting directly to the FDA Commissioner as Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods . Once the reorganization is in place , he ' ll have decision - making authority over all HFP entities , including related ORA activities . He ' ll be in charge of leading the whole program , as well as allocating resources , prioritizing risks , setting policies , and handling major response activities for human foods . The leaders of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and the Office of Food Policy and Response will report to Jones until the HFP reorganization is finalized . As we mentioned before , the labs that handle human and animal food will now be part of the unified HFP . The FDA is also sharing a graphic that gives a brief overview of the proposed changes so far: the Proposal for a Unified HFP . Additionally , the agency recently gave more details about how the Office of Dietary Supplement Programs will be included in the newly created Office of Food Chemical Safety , Dietary Supplements and Innovation in the HFP . This is to make sure that the dietary supplements program remains a top priority for the agency . The FDA is committed to keeping everyone informed as the proposal continues to be developed .
