General Description
: The Inspector shall be qualified and capable of performing inspections and other related duties to ensure compliance with current county codes and regulations. Under the direct supervision, of the Senior Building Inspector or Chief Building official.
Essential Duties
:
Inspect buildings during construction to ensure compliance with the building code, other applicable requirements and approved plans and specifications.
Investigate complaints
and make inspections of existing buildings to determine if hazardous or unsafe conditions exist relating to structures and their use.
Inspect new and existing on-site waste water systems.
Inspect new and existing driveways.
Assist and advise the general public in matters relating to construction and code requirements.
Process permit applications.
Review plans and specifications for construction projects to ensure compliance with codes and other applicable regulations.
Inspect complaints regarding nuisances, land use, and ordinance(s) violations.
Prepare written reports, issue notices to correct code violations, issue “stop work” notices, testify in court regarding violations.
Assist and advise owners, contractors, designers, architects and engineers on code and design requirements for any construction project.
Assist other inspectors on difficult or unusual code requirements for any construction project.
Prepare and maintain records and reports of plan checking procedures.
Prepare written reports, documentation and correspondences.
Obtain and track information in the county’s permit data base, which may be accessed from the office or remotely.
Support team members and the over-all goals of Development Services.
May be required to respond to emergency situations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Knowledge of materials and methods of construction.
Knowledge of the codes and legal application thereof.
Ability to read and objectively interpret code requirements in a knowledgeable manner, and to tactfully and effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with the general public while maintaining effective relationships.
Ability to independently recognize, evaluate and properly resolve unique problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
Ability to maintain good records and prepare written reports.
Physically capable of safely moving about on construction work sites.
Skill in the safe and efficient operation of a motor vehicle.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
The posting of property for variance and conditional use requests. Investigation and follow-up of complaints regarding nuisances and land use violations.
Nature of contacts with others required for successful job performance:
Ability to effectively communicate, in a tactful manner, complicated information to the general public who, at times, may be upset.
Ability to work with other staff members forming an effective team serving the citizens of Park County.
Responsibility for property, materials, money and confidential information:
This position requires the handling of funds paid for permits and contractor licenses. Material and equipment used includes but is not limited to: calculator, County vehicle, telephone, computer, fax machine, copier. Position requires discretion with regard to confidential information.
Working Environment/Physical Activities:
The majority of time is spent in the field doing inspections, traveling improved and unimproved roads. This position may require the individual to occasionally change a flat tire, free a vehicle from mud or snow, walk into a job site and at the job site be able to climb stairs, crawl under floors, walk on a roof and use ladders. Office work is done in a noisy, busy environment with a great deal of time spent on the telephone. This position requires frequent exposure to cold, heights, noise, driving, standing, sitting, walking, bending, working with others and repetitive movements.
The job location is based in Fairplay, Colorado although travel throughout the county is required for inspections.
