Hanover , Va . – On Monday , May 2 , 2022 , at approximately 6:09 p . m . , deputies responded to the Montpelier Shoppes in the 16000 block of Mountain Road for a report of an adult male lying unconscious on the ground next to a vehicle .  
    
   Once on scene , deputies located an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound . The gun was located next to the body . Lifesaving measures were attempted but were ultimately unsuccessful .
    
   The adult male has been identified as John Slaw , 81 , of Montpelier .
    
   Investigators continue to look into the moments leading up to this incident and are currently not seeking any suspects in this case . We continue to work with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the official cause of death .
    
   We extend our deepest condolences to the family of John Slaw during this difficult time .
