At the June 6 , 2022 , Batavia City Council meeting , Mayor Jeff Schielke proclaimed June 2022 as PRIDE MONTH .
Here is the official proclamation text:
WHEREAS , the City of Batavia strives to celebrate diversity with its residents and all who set foot in the City; and
WHEREAS , the United States was founded upon the declaration that all people are created equal; that life , liberty and the pursuit of happiness are among the inalienable rights of every person; and that each shall be afforded the equal protection of the law; and
WHEREAS , the month of June is designated as Pride Month across the land to commemorate the Stonewall Riots which occurred in June , 1969 , generally recognized as the catalyst of the LGBTQ+ Rights Movement; and
WHEREAS , while much progress has been made , the ongoing struggle of transgender , lesbian , gay , bisexual and other sexual minorities for basic civil rights continues to provide inspiration to all , the lives and livelihoods of LGBTQ+ are still often threatened; and
WHEREAS , all citizens and especially our youth should feel valued , safe , empowered and supported by their peers , educators , community leaders and the community at large , without regard to sexual orientation , gender identity or expression; and
WHEREAS , Batavia celebrates the history and diversity of our city’s lesbian , gay , bisexual and transgender community , and promotes an atmosphere in which all residents can live free from discrimination; and
WHEREAS , LGBTQ+ Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the harmony in which we all coexist . [ . . . ]
