CHESTERFIELD COUNTY , VA —
The Chesterfield Cooperative Extension is partnering with
the
Plant A Row for the Hungry ( PAR ) , a national people - helping - people program that encourages gardeners to grow a little extra and donate the produce .
Residents can help address food insecurity across Chesterfield and metro Richmond by simply growing a few extra rows of produce to get fresh and nutritious produce to those that may not have access to it otherwise .
The Chesterfield Master Gardeners are leading the campaign this year with collections on Mondays starting May 2 through Oct . 31 from 9 a . m . to noon at the Chesterfield Extension Office at 9501 Lori Road .
There will be no collections on the following holidays: May 30 , June 20 , July 4 and Sept . 5 .
To further rise to the challenge , the Master Gardeners are also starting their own giving garden .
Produce from your garden should be recently harvested within two days . Do not wash prior to donation , but instead lightly brush off excess dirt without damaging or bruising the produce . Choose produce that has no signs of mold , spoilage , bruising or insects . Bring produce donations in clean paper bags ( preferred ) or plastic bags . All donations will be given to
SevaTruck RVA
, a free meal food truck that will transform the ingredients to make nutritious meals to feed the homeless and hungry .
