Bismarck - Burleigh Public Health ( BBPH ) and Bismarck Police Department ( BPD ) are partnering with area bars and local colleges to prevent underage drinking by using Fake ID Scanners ( IDentiFake Scanner ) . The pilot project began in August of 2021 , and has resulted in 107 fake IDs confiscated to date .  
   “Fake IDs pose serious problems to the people and companies that sell and serve alcohol , and our community as a whole , said Susan Kahler , BBPH SAP Coordinator .  “Fake IDs are easy to buy and create . Consequently , it is harder to control access to alcohol because the challenges of identification and age confirmation have become increasingly difficult . This why the pilot project is so valuable . ” 
   Once a Liquor License Establishment such as restaurant , bar or convenience stores , agrees to use the Fake ID Scanner the establishment will receive training on the device from BPD Officer Caity Horne . The business will turn in any collected fake IDs to BPD . The Fake ID Scanners are provided free to area businesses to use .  
   “The goal of checking IDs for the sale and service of alcohol , is to confirm the individuals’ age to prevent underage access to alcohol and to stop the legal , financial and social consequences resulting from underage drinking , ” said Horne . “This is a huge task given the increasing numbers of fake IDs on the market and the ease with which they can be obtained . Quality fake IDs are very similar to real IDs and it’s hard for those who check ID’s to tell the difference if they lack proper training . ” 
   In addition to providing the scanners , BPD offers Responsible Beverage Training to area bars at no cost . Contact Officer Clint Fuller at 223 - 1212 to schedule a training .
