   Avondale announces winners of Art Scholarship contest
   The City of Avondale , in partnership with the Avondale Municipal Art Committee is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s
   Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers Achieving Artists Scholarship Art Contest
    , which took place on Tuesday , April 19 . The contest awarded $5 , 000 in scholarship monies to the winners to further their education . First place winner was Bianca Corona , a senior from Westview High School , for her painting titled “Profile of Attraction . ” Sarah Medina , a student at La Jolla High School , took second place with her drawing titled “Free Floating as a Protective Measure , ” while third place went to La Jolla High School senior Alondra Plaza Cervantes , for her photograph titled “Forest Lily . ”

   Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers Achieving Artists Scholarship Art Contest
    was open to all high school age graduating seniors in Avondale who are planning on enrolling into college . Artwork was submitted in the media of paintings , drawings , mix/digital media , photography and sculptures , with a total of 30 entries . This year’s contest was well represented by aspiring artists from five Avondale high schools - - Agua Fria High School , Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center - Estrella Mountain , La Joya High School , West Point High School , and Westview High School . Participants , parents and teachers were recognized for their efforts during the reception . Artwork of all contest entries is on display until April 28 at the Estrella Mountain Community College Performing Arts Center , 3000 North Dysart Road , Avondale .   
   Now in its 11
   th
    year , the program has awarded approximately $40 , 000 to budding artists . The idea for the contest was conceived by current councilmember Bryan Kilgore , an educator and artist who served as chair of the art committee and was himself a recipient of a college scholarship that allowed him to pursue a profession as an artist . Several past winners of the contest have also gone on to professional careers involving art .  
   For instance , in 2015 , Westview High School student Giovanni Araiza won first place for his space chimp mixed media piece called ‘HAM’ . After graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Media Arts and Animation , Giovanni Araiza worked on astronaut simulations for NASA as a 3D artist .
