This year , police departments from Monmouth County are partnering with
   Autism New Jersey

   Belmar Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh
    and will host the first annual Polar Plunge in Belmar of April 23rd .

   What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
   Autism Spectrum Disorder ( ASD ) or autism is a neurobiological disorder characterized by impairments in social communication and interaction as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior . Individuals with autism have difficulty interacting with others: building relationships , using language , regulating their emotions , and understanding others’ points of view .
   According to the CDC , 1 in 44 children in the U . S . is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder ( ASD ) . The disorder does not discriminate and effects families from all walks of life .
   Police officers in New Jersey receive specialized training on how to interact with people with developmental disabilities , including autism . Holmdel is also a proud supporter of the Special Olympics . Each year we participate in the Special Olympics Torch Run and our Honor Guard attends the opening ceremonies at The College of New Jersey . Over the years we have proudly supported athletes from town and help them achieve the goals of competing in the games .
