April 1 , 2022 - The Norfolk - based 757 Makerspace opened its new location this morning on the grounds of Fort Monroe with a ribbon - cutting ceremony attended by owner Beau Turner and several Hampton city leaders .
The creative studio and workspace occupies 12 , 733 square feet that features wood and metal shops , 3 - D printers , labs for sewing and electronics and much more . It will provide instruction , tools and collaboration for inventors , entrepreneurs and creative types of all ages . Turner said that by adding a location on the Peninsula , 757 Makerspace can expand its reach to draw people from all across the region .
We looked at other places , but we kept coming back to the spot on Fort Monroe , Turner said . It ' s such a historic location , and such a beautiful spot . Right here , in between Firehouse Coffee and the Oozlefinch brewery , it just feels right .
Turner and Mayor Donnie Tuck officially cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening . The ceremony was also attended by City Manager Mary Bunting , as well as members of city council and the Fort Monroe Authority . The new location was made possible through the cooperation of Hampton City Schools , the Economic Development Authority , the Hampton Roads Small Business Development Center and StartWheel , making use of a $100 , 000 grant from the state ' s Department of Housing and Community Development .
Mayor Tuck said: “We are delighted to have 757 Makerspace in Hampton . Our city is committed to nurturing small and startup businesses , and to encourage budding entrepreneurs needing a place where they can collaborate with other creative individuals . ”
Hampton City Schools sees this as part of its vision for the Academy of Entrepreneurship and Information Design at Kecoughtan High School . Seth Black , director of career and technical education , said: Our current curriculum , the lab spaces at Kecoughtan High School and 757 Makerspace are perfect for synergistic creativity .
The Hampton location of 757 Makerspace is at 16 Murray Street on the grounds of Fort Monroe . .
