The Town of Collierville’s Public Works Department has started their 2022 paving project that will end with 4 . 5 percent of the Town’s roads being repaved . In total 32 . 53 lane miles ( a lane mile is 12 feet wide and 5 , 280 feet long ) will have new surfaces which will improve driving conditions , road aesthetics , and add structural capacity . The project has been delayed slightly due to recent weather , but is currently scheduled to be completed by June 1
st .
With a budget of 2 . 5 million , this year’s road paving project is one of the largest in Collierville’s history . The budget for 2021 ( 1 . 5 million ) was funded solely by money the Town received from the Tennessee Street Aid Fund . This year , the Board of Mayor and Alderman designated 1 . 5 million from the Town’s General Fund to be used in addition to state funds to increase the number of Collierville roads that will receive new asphalt .
The State Street Aid Fund is a special revenue fund that derives its operating revenue from state shared gasoline taxes . Distributed on a per capita basis , the revenue is dependent on the amount of gasoline taxes collected and is used only for road repair and maintenance .
“While the funds received from the state have remained stable over the years , the cost of asphalt paving has increased about 10% each year due to the increased cost of a barrel of oil , fuel and labor . We are thankful to the BMA for budgeting funds from the General Fund to help with this year ' s project , said Murray Beard , Public Services Technical Specialist .
Public Works keeps records of paving dates so they are able to determine when streets will need maintenance and repaving . Residents can also report potholes and road failures to Public Services by using the
Mayor’s Action Center
or reach them directly at 901 - 457 - 2800 .
Please be alert when driving in or near work zones , especially when workers are present . In 2020 , there were 3 , 700 crashes in work zones on Tennessee roads . Do your part to keep yourself and others safe by moving over and slowing down when you see road work and never text and drive .
