The Town of Arlington , through its contractor All States Materials Group , will be performing Pavement Preservation work during the 2022 construction season . Pavement preservation is a cost - effective road resurfacing approach intended to enhance pavement performance and extend the service life of paved roads . Pavement preservation work will consist of preliminary preparations ( including pavement leveling , spot road repairs , and utility structure adjustments ) followed by the new surface treatment application . The Town of Arlington will utilize two distinct surface treatment applications in 2022: an Asphalt - Rubber SAM ( stress absorbing membrane ) in Project Area #1 and a Bonded Wearing Course in Project Area #2 . The project areas and the application processes are described in further detail in the following paragraphs .
Project Area #1
Project Area #1 is comprised of the following roads which will receive an Asphalt - Rubber SAM / Hot Surface pavement preservation treatment . This pavement preservation technique is intended to create a waterproof seal that is flexible and resists cracking , thereby protecting the underlying pavement layer and extending the functional life of the roadway . Following the preliminary work previously noted , the construction process consists of the application of a hot crumb rubber liquid asphalt followed by a specially treated stone that is rolled into the hot liquid . The construction process is completed very quickly , minimizing delays to abutting residents and other roadway travelers .

Project Area #2
Project Area #2 is comprised of the following roads which will receive a Bonded Wearing Course pavement preservation treatment . This pavement preservation technique is intended to create a waterproof seal and a new friction course to protect the underlying pavement layer and extend the functional life of the roadway . Following the preliminary work previously noted , the construction process consists of minimal roadway milling at intersections with other roads followed by the application of thin yet durable asphalt layer by a specialized paving vehicle . Abutters and other roadway travelers should anticipate full roadway closures or lane restrictions during the pavement application and subsequent curing process .
