On January 4 , 2021 Officer Sean Ryan was promoted by Chief of Police Brian Smith to the rank of Corporal . He participated with other officers in a competitive process last spring that made him eligible for this promotion .
Corporal Ryan lives in Port Angles with his family and has worked for the Port Angeles Police Department for 15 years . He has also worked for the WA Criminal Justice Training Commission ( CJTC ) for an extended period as a contract instructor . His primarily work was in the Basic Law Enforcement Academy ( BLEA ) . In this assignment he became a subject matter expert in firearms training , use of force , tactics , de - escalation and legal issues . He also worked in curriculum development and was called upon by the executive director to demonstrate and explain aspects of the training program to key governmental officials and elected leaders .
Corporal Ryan has a number of collateral duties which include field training officer , defensive tactics instructor , firearms instructor and medical officer . He has a bachelors degree from Humbolt State University in California and maintains his certification as an emergency medical technician .
Corporal Ryan will be assigned to the Red Patrol Team along with Corporal Bruce Fernie and Sergeant Kevin Miller .
